The Seasons are Changing at Bloom: Leaf Peeping in Fort Collins

Autumn brings a stunning array of color to Northern Colorado, and Fort Collins is at the heart of this seasonal magic. The region’s vibrant landscape, coupled with its unique blend of mountain ranges and meadows, creates the perfect setting for “leaf peeping” – a beloved autumn pastime here in Colorado where people venture outdoors to admire the colorful, changing trees.

Colorado’s varied elevation and climate create ideal conditions for trees to put on a brilliant show. As autumn approaches, aspens turn gold, while cottonwoods, maples, and oaks transition to shades of red, orange, and amber. In Fort Collins and the surrounding areas, this color show is particularly notable, and there are a number of places to see this display within a short drive from the new homes in Bloom.

Poudre Canyon

The Poudre Canyon is a must-see for fall foliage enthusiasts. Located about an hour west of Fort Collins, this scenic canyon winds along Colorado Highway 14 through the Roosevelt National Forest, following the Cache la Poudre River. 

The drive itself is a spectacle, with colorful trees lining the canyon and the rushing waters of the river providing a serene backdrop. Aspens, cottonwoods, and willows create a mix of gold, red, and green along the route, making it an easily accessible and immersive fall experience for Bloom residents. 

All along the drive, there are trailheads and campgrounds that allow visitors to more deeply immerse themselves in the colorful forest. One popular stop on the Poudre Canyon drive is Cameron Pass, a high-mountain pass that offers breathtaking views.

Horsetooth Reservoir

Situated just a few minutes west of Fort Collins, Horsetooth Reservoir is a perfect stop for a quick autumn hike or just a nice place to spend a spare hour when you want to soak up some fall color. 

The juxtaposition of the shimmering lake’s surface against the bright array of trees on the hillside is a sight to behold, and makes it a great spot for photography, too. 

A short 20-minute drive from Bloom Fort Collins gets you to the reservoir, and if you’re inspired to explore a bit further, just a few minutes up the road is Lory State Park, where you’ll find more fall color and hiking trails. 

North Park

If you’re willing to venture a bit farther, North Park offers a secluded leaf-peeping experience. 

Nestled between mountain ranges, this wide-open valley is home to expansive aspen groves and colorful wetlands that come alive with fiery autumn hues. It’s worth making a weekend trip, as North Park is about a 2-hour drive from Fort Collins.

Rocky Mountain National Park

Leaf peeping in Rocky Mountain National Park is just a short drive from Fort Collins, and it’s wildly popular for good reason. 

The park’s high elevation means the colors change early, making it one of the first places to catch the fall foliage—but it’s also one of the hardest spots to access. To enter the park between May 24 and mid-October, you’ll need a timed entry reservation and a park pass or entrance fee. While the advance reservations fill up almost immediately, about 40 percent of the reservations are released on Recreation.gov the night before. 

If you’re lucky enough to snag one of these during peak fall color, and show up at your reserved time, you’re guaranteed a shimmering display of golden aspens contrasting against the rugged mountains and evergreen forests.
